The healing fast is intended to cleanse the body and soul. But: If you want to start fasting treatment, you have to prepare yourself and your body for it. And there are a few things to keep in mind while fasting.

The easiest way to start the fast is to strictly avoid foods that are difficult to digest, such as meat, hard cheese, fried foods and oils in the previous days. Potatoes, rice, vegetables, fruit (apples) and water are ideal.

Days of assistance as preparation

The fasting treatment then begins with a one- to two-day preparatory phase, called relief days. Light meals such as steamed vegetables, vegetable soup or onions lighten the intestinal burden. In this way, energy is reduced by about 1000 kcal per day.

Avoid alcohol and nicotine

Finally, from this point on, alcohol and nicotine are taboo. Ideally, caffeine should also be avoided, although this is no longer as strictly regulated as it used to be and 1-2 cups of coffee per day is generally tolerated. Moderate and normal physical activity is recommended, as is emotional preparation for fasting (more rest, less stress). Fasting therapy should be loud Fasting treatment guidelines are best done in a group under medical supervision.

An empty stomach prevents hunger

Then the first day of the actual fast begins with emptying the bowels so that you are not hungry during the fast. A common remedy for this is a laxative drink with Glauber’s salt (from the pharmacy): a liter of water containing 30 to 40 grams of Glauber’s salt is drunk within 20 minutes. Lemon juice can improve the taste of milk. After 30 minutes, one and a half to one liter of liquid (water or tea) is taken.

Fasting: drink instead of food

During fasting days, a quarter liter of vegetable broth, the same amount of vegetable juice or fresh fruit juice, 30 grams of honey and at least 2.5 liters of liquid (water, herbal tea) are taken every day. The maximum energy allowed on fasting days is 250 to 500 kcal per day. Oil may also be consumed during long fasting treatments.

Tips for gentle cleaning

Because vegetables, fruits, and whole grains are scarce on fasting days, fasting people sometimes need laxatives to empty their bowels at least every two days.

Mild laxatives include, for example, lemon, sour or onion juice, apple cider vinegar, butter, breadcrumbs or coffee. If mild relief is not sufficient, such as castor oil, salt water, Glauber or Epsom salt, alder or senna tea and lactose can also be used. In severe cases, an enema can provide relief.

How long to fast

A fasting regimen usually lasts two to four weeks, according to Buchinger. But shorter periods of fasting can also have positive effects. If fasting is used as a treatment, the fasting period can last up to six weeks.

According to the medical association for therapeutic fasting and eating (ÄGHE), therapeutic fasting should last 7 to 10 days, the day of preparation and then three days to normalize eating habits.

What is the meaning of fasting?

At the end of the fast, called fasting, a raw or cooked apple is eaten slowly and potato soup is eaten in the evening. Then begins the so-called re-feeding, a nutritional structure with a light vegetarian diet with lots of fiber and a high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids.

Food should be eaten slowly and deliberately. When the diet increases, the energy increases day by day: 800, 1,000, 1,200, 1,600 kcal. Drink plenty of fluids between meals. Spontaneous bowel movements and bowel movements should occur again on the fourth day of the diet at the latest.

Who is allowed not to fast?

Healthy people can usually fast alone at home. However, it is advisable to consult your family doctor first. If you are fasting for the first time, you can seek expert advice and support from a trained fasting guide or practitioner with fasting experience. A person suffering from previous diseases should not fast without help.
